4 ways to stay healthy this winter

Winter is here. It’s getting colder with each new day and staying healthy in these conditions can be quite a challenge. It’s the season when colds, flu, stomach bugs, and other infections can run rampant. It’s the perfect time to review some strategies to stay healthy this winter.

Eat more fruit and vegetables

In winter people usually tend to fill up on unhealthy comfort food, when it’s cold and dark outside. No matter how tempting this is, you have to remember that fruit and vegetables are a regular part of your diet. Winter vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, swede and turnips can be made into a delicious winter meal for the whole family.

Frequent hand-washing

Because many different germs can survive on surfaces, you need to wash your hands as often as possible. Winter is the season when germs thrive and you want to make sure you don’t get infected by touching a spot infected with germs. Washing your hands—the right way and at the right time—eliminates the germs before they can gain access and make you sick.

Drink more milk

You are at high risk to get a cold in winter, so make sure to keep your immune system in a great condition. Milk and dairy products, such as yoghurt and cheese are great sources of protein, vitamins A and B12 & calcium. Drink more milk to strengthen your immune system and reduce the chances of catching a cold. There are other foods that help boost your immunity. Read more about it here.

Try new activities

Don’t use the cold winter months as an excuse to stay in and lounge around. Instead, get out and try a new activity –maybe ice skating, or taking a bracing winter walk on the beach or through the park. Regular exercise helps control your weight, boost your immune system, and is a good way to break the tension that can build if the family is constantly cooped up inside the house.
