The research studied 74 people with type 2 diabetes. All of them were randomly assigned a vegetarian diet or a typical anti-diabetic diet. Moreover, the vegetarian diet was particularly vegan, consisting of fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, legumes and seeds, with limited animal products (one low-fat yogurt cup a day). The diets of all participants were restricted to 500 calories a day less than they would need to maintain their weight.

Six months later, the people following the conventional diet have lost an average of 3.2kg, while the ones following the vegetarian diet has lost about twice as much – 6.2kg. Although this is a small study, it shows the true potential of vegetarian diet.

Farewell meat, Hello veggies!

Dr. Kahleová said: “Vegetarian diets proved to be the most effective diets for weight loss. However, we also showed that a vegetarian diet is much more effective at reducing muscle fat, thus improving metabolism.

“This finding is important for people who are trying to lose weight, including those suffering from metabolic syndrome and/or type 2 diabetes. But it is also relevant to anyone who takes their weight management seriously and wants to stay lean and healthy.”
